Welcome to your Rotherham Online Centre!
Rotherham Online Centres are open during normal library open hours. If your local library is closed you can go to your nearest open library to use their computers instead.
You can use the computers for word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentations. You can also surf the web and send and receive e-mails - as long as you follow the safety guide you have been given in the library. Remember: you can only access the Internet if your parent/guardian has signed a permission form. If you are 11 or under, you will only be allowed to use the Internet if you are with a parent/guardian or as part of an organised session with staff.
The use of the computers is free, although there is a small cost for all black and white and colour print outs (as advertised in the library). Floppy disks are also for sale at the desk.
We hope you enjoy using the Rotherham Online Centres, but do follow the rules below or you may have your membership taken away from you.
General Information
- You can usually book a computer for 1 hour at a time. If no-one has booked to go on the computer after you, you should be able to book another 1 hour session straight away.
- Look after your library ticket: you must bring it with you every time you want to use a computer. Do not give it to anyone else to use.
- When you join the Rotherham Online Centre you will be given a password and username which you need to remember to be able to use the computers. Keep it private.
- Although you will have access to a web folder to save your work into, it is best to save any important work you do onto floppy disk.
- You are not allowed to install or run your own software on any of the computers in the library. Also, if you are found messing around with the software or hardware in the Rotherham Online Centres you will no longer be allowed to use the computers.
Internet and E-Mail Use
- Even though the Internet is filtered (special software that removes any inappropriate sites), you should still be careful when looking at unknown sites. When searching, try to use a "child friendly" search site such as Yahooligans (www.yahooligans.com). If you do accidentally come across a site that makes you feel upset or uncomfortable then tell a member of staff straight away.
- You will be able to set up an e-mail account in the Rotherham Online Centre. Only give out your e-mail address to people you know and trust. Be extra careful when you give out your e-mail address and any other personal details online - especially in chat rooms.
- You must not use e-mail to bully, harass or upset other people. Those found doing so will not be allowed to use the computers anymore. If you are sent any disturbing e-mails then tell a member of staff straight away so that the problem can be sorted out.
- For more information and guidance read our Safe Use of the Internet sheet available in all libraries.
- You are not allowed to play online computer games or to download any programs.
When you have finished using the computer you must log yourself off (you will be shown how to do this). Staff are here to help, so if you have any trouble with the facilities or any questions then all you have to do is ask!
